When To Move Into High Definition?

High Definition, Video Production Add comments

This is a question I have been pondering for some time now. It may seem like a simple choice given that everyone seems to be upgrading to HD. Now there are more and more cable and satellite providers offering HD. There are finally reasonably priced HD-DVR and HTPC’s readily available. And now HD program can be downloaded from the web at the click of a button. Read my post on streaming HD. I personally have upgraded the entire house with HDTV sets and watch nothing but HDTV programming. So what’s the problem?

As a videograpger, I currently author all of my videos to DVD. While DVD’s still looks good at 480p, DVD is not HD(720-1080p). So why not just switch to a HD format disc? There is one major problem, the format war. We are currently in a format war, as there are two formats fighting for market share. These formats are HD-DVD and Blu Ray Disc.

In previous format wars the distinction between the formats in question was much greater. The problem in the current feud is that the formats are too closely alike. One has more movie studios backing it, the other is cheaper, one has had quality issues, the other has smaller storage. As an HD enthusiast I am not even sure which one I will choose.

Until one of the formats wins and becomes main stream I cannot back either one. There has to be a clear winner, and the player must be in grandma’s living room before I can. It just doesn’t make since right now to support a format that virtually nobody has. I do have plans to slowly move my cameras over to HD. I happen to be a Canon fanboy so I’m really looking at their new HD camera lineup. I hope this HD war is over soon and we can all just enjoy the great HD content that is available.

I’ve been doing weddings for over 2 years now and the biggest obstacle I come across is that not enough brides seem to see a value in a wedding videographer until after the wedding. There are far too many “amateur professional” wedding videographers out there (especially in Denver, Colorado). I’ve recently begun to offer HD but have had just about 0 interest in a HD wedding Video.

    Hey Adam

I totally agree with you. Most Brides do not place enough value in professional video production until the after the wedding. I have spoke to numerous Brides who have said “I wish I had a quality wedding video of our wedding”. Most brides still just have a family member set up a camera for them. I have found recently that videography is on the rise in the Dallas area. Which is good.

I am also getting into photography (http://www.jcphotographydallas.com) as it seems to be the first stop for Brides these days.

I like your site. I can’t get the video to work for me though. What are you using?

My videos are being re-uploaded now after moving to a new server. The old one was hacked by a group of Moroccan hackers. Can you elaborate on the “what are you using” part? Did you mean for the website? Thanks for the compliments on my site. I am a self taught web designer and still learning about design but I’m very happy with how it has come along.

    Hey Adam

Sorry to hear about your site being hacked. Hope you get up and running again soon!!

Sorry for the confusion. What type of video are you using on your site; Flash, QuickTime, Windows Media, Real Player? I’m on a Mac so I was just curious if it may have be a compatible issue.

Kudos again on the site. I think most good web designers are self taught.

    Cheers :)
